While bathing this gentleman. He became agitated. The first warning sign; was a punch in my face. Subsequently, I proceeded to put him in 5-point restraints. This was for his safety as well as mine. Just as I was about to apply the last restraint, to his right leg. Before I could thread the strap around the bed frame. He kicked out. I noticed something from the corner of my eye. Which caused me to turn my head away from the coming blow. When his foot connected with my left shoulder and neck. I was pushed off balance and fell into a cart against the wall.

However, at first I did not think I was injured. Our anesthesiologist injected some Lidocaine into my neck muscles to stop the spasm. Therefore I finished my shift and went to my next job. Which I had only started the day before; and I was still in orientation. About 1 hour into my shift, my left shoulder began to hurt. So I decided to go home. Well by the time I drove home; about ½ mile. I could not move my arms to open the car door.
Now here I was; sitting there wondering how I was ever going to get out of the car. I laid my head down on the steering wheel and started to cry. My forehead pushed the horn. Resulting in my boys coming out of the house to see what I was honking about. Since I could not drive; and my boys were too young to drive. The three of us walked to the hospital emergency room. Now just a little tidbit. I was a single mother raising two sons ages at the time of 13 and 10. Therefore I was their sole caregiver and provider.
Needless to say, I ended up with a C5-6 disc herniation. While my first surgery in October 1989 was an utter disaster. Here is another little tidbit. My surgery was scheduled for October 3, 1989. On the Friday before the 3rd. The hospital called me at work to reschedule. I wanted to know the reason for rescheduling. Whereby they stated that the insurance had not approved the surgery. So they wanted to reschedule for October 17, 1989, at 5:00 PM. Now I then asked them to give me a few minutes to call my insurance company. Needless to say by threatening the insurance company; with a liability suit should they delay my surgery. Resulting in my paralyzation from the neck down. Immediately the hospital called and informed me that the October 3rd surgery was still on the schedule.

After the passing of my son, as my pain spiraled out of control. So did my abilities. Unable to spend any amount of time in any one position. Usually, 20 to 30 minutes was my maximum time limit. Therefore I was constantly moving from the chair, then walking, then laying down. With such restricted time limits; regular exercise was out of the question. While my muscles began to deteriorate; and my health started a rapid decline, from all of the medications I was now taking. Since most of them were Opioids. Luckily I do not have that gene for addiction. Because one day in 2012; I just decided enough was enough. I stopped all of my Opioid medications. As an RN I knew to taper the doses until eliminated.
