Making Vinegar From Wine

Making Vinegar From Wine: is good for the environment. We have all heard of Jesus turning “water into wine.”. Since we are mere mortals, consequently, the best we can do is turn wine into vinegar. But this is a very GOOD thing. While the benefits of having homemade wine vinegar are apparent, such as having fresh wine Vinegar for your salads. There is also the added benefit of not adding preservatives. Moreover, homemade vinegar is good for the environment. Since vinegar is an excellent cleaning substance.

Making Vinegar From Wine

First, you want to start with the wine. By using unfinished bottles of wine. Or bottles that you did not like. This reduces wasting money. Now you can separate into two batches. One for white wine. And the other is for red wine. Of course, you can always combine the two.

However, I would separate the red and white for salad dressings. What I am making here is for household use. Therefore, I combine the two. Now you will need a gallon-sized container. One with a spigot for dispensing the vinegar.

Making Vinegar from Wine:

To start, you will need 4 cups of wine. Then you will add 1 cup of “mother” vinegar. Now the only mother vinegar I was able to find was the “Apple Cider Vinegar”. This is usually found in “natural food” stores. But I have been able to find it at the grocery store. While you are able to make your vinegar without “Mother Vinegar”. This usually takes a couple of weeks and attracts fruit flies. Which can be avoided by putting cheesecloth across the top of your container.

Having A Constant Supply of Wine Vinegar:

Combine your wine & “Mother” vinegar in the gallon container. Make sure you include the “Live” glob looking portion. This is the bacteria that changes your wine. Using the proportions given. Now cover with cheesecloth and secure with a rubber band. Within a couple of weeks; the “Live” portion will have settled at the bottom of the container. From this point on you will only need to add wine to keep this collection fermenting. Taking out the Vinegar from the spigot; keeps from disturbing the bacteria that have settled to the bottom.

There are many uses for vinegar. Both inside and outside your home. Most importantly these uses do not harm the environment. Whereas the use of many “Store Bought” cleaners; contain dangerous chemicals. Since the many uses for your vinegar are numerous. And many are listed in another article. I urge you to go there. Above all consider just how much we all can improve the environment. Just by being a little creative.
