Napa County Mounted Sheriff’s Posse

Napa County Mounted Sheriff's Posse

When I first heard about the Napa County Mounted Sheriff’s Posse, I wanted to join. However, back then they did not allow women to join. Now, I had all of the requirements. I owned a good rugged horse, I took the “Arrest & Firearms” course at Napa Valley College. Along with my then-husband. One of the reasons I wanted to join was as an RN I would be able to offer immediate medical treatment that went outside the basic medical abilities of the other riders. Also, I was MICN (Mobile Intensive Care Nurse) certified. Which offered an even higher ability of emergency nursing. Although I had all these benefits, I can still remember one of the officers talking to me, obviously not wanting a woman on the team.

Moreover, his question meant to stop me in my tracks just increased my determination. Here was the question he posed to me: “How would a woman your size be able to bring a 300 pound man up the side of a mountain”? Of course, my answer stymied him. I simply told him, “The same way you would! I would let my horse do the pulling, and I would guide the rope to maneuver through the underbrush and rocks”. Needless to say, he was not happy with my answer. He then simply stated that the wives would not be happy with a woman out all night with their husbands. However, that was in the mid 80s and I am happy to see that there are several women on the posse.

Napa County Mounted Sheriff’s Posse: History

While the Napa County Mounted Sheriff’s Posse is the oldest working posse in California. Having been organized in 1949, it has distinguished itself throughout the years. With more than half a century of distinguished service to the community. Certainly, these dedicated men and women assist the Sheriff’s Office whenever the need arises. Moreover, many of the posse’s functions are for search and rescue. There are many other aspects to this unique group. For instance, they assist during local emergencies. Like flooding and fires. Sometimes the only way to a victim is on horseback. Horses are strong swimmers. Many have been able to tow small boats to rescue those that would have otherwise perished. Yet they help in many non-emergency way as well. With showings in Parades, Charity Events, and Fundraising activities. All designed to support their local communities in every way they can

Napa County Mounted Posse: Help Support These Amazing Individuals

When you happen to see one of these amazing riders and their horse. Please ask if you can pet the horse before doing so. One never knows if they are working or not, and it is just a courteous way to show respect. For the rider and his or her horse. Whenever you hear of a Charity or Fundraiser that benefits the posse, please give what you can. Although most of us think to donate you need to give large amounts to do justice. You would be surprised to know that the everyday worker giving just $5.00 to $10.00 adds up quickly. Rather than just saying you cannot afford to give, go one day without your Starbuck’s coffee, or whatever brand you prefer. And there is your donation.

***Just a little footnote: I never was able to join the Napa County Mounted Sheriff’s Posse. However, there are women on the posse today!***
